Familiar Subjects, New Meanings

This exhibition features two prints from the Figge’s permanent collection. Jim Dine’s expressive images can be understood as a synthesis of Pop art and Abstract Expressionism. Like the Pop artists, Dine chose familiar objects and symbols from popular culture. He then used gestural marks and painterly brushstrokes borrowed from Abstract Expressionism to personalize his subjects.

Use the guided questions to explore Dine’s subjects and techniques. The display also encourages the viewer to invent new meanings for familiar symbols.

Exhibitions in this gallery are designed to help the viewer build art vocabulary and learn to construct meaning for works of art.
