Childe Hassam
U.S. 1859-1935The Haybarn 99.0010
Childe Hassam created this etching from a drawing he did at the summer residence of his friends, Mr. and Mrs. Charles H. Whitcomb of Stratham, New Hampshire. An American Impressionist and member of "The Ten," Hassam rendered the New England landscape and urban New York with freshness and clarity. Trained as a wood engraver in Boston, Hassam went on to become a successful illustrator of children's stories and did not come into contact with Impressionism until his second trip to Europe in the 1880s. In his fifties, Hassam seriously took up printmaking, producing a large number of etchings and lithographs.
