Juan (attr.) De Juanes

Spain 1523-1579
The Dormition of the Virgin 25.0126

The panel accompanying De Juanes' Descent of the Holy Ghost, The Dormition of the Virgin, depicts the death of Jesus' mother, Mary. Early apocryphal literature from the 4th century contains versions of this story but The Golden Legend which appeared in the 13th century contains extended accounts. The subject was frequently represented after this period. De Juanes was from a family of painters in Valencia. He was taught by his father with whom he worked until about 1550. He continued his father's Italianate style, but exaggerated dramatic movement and expression. His work was extremely popular and highly venerated during his lifetime.
