Gustave Wiegand studied art at the Royal Academy in Berlin, and some time before 1894 came to the U.S. to study painting under William Merritt Chase. By the first decade of the twentieth century, he was a well-known landscape artist, receiving the first of many awards for his work in 1904 at the St. Louis World Exposition. Chase's influence can be seen in the brushwork and subdued palette of this very peaceful woodland scene.
