Doris Lee

U.S. 1905-1983
Thanksgiving OP 378

Doris Lee's affectionate look at the frenetic preparations surrounding a family's Thanksgiving dinner is a nostalgic peek at this thoroughly American holiday, straight from the heartland. Born in Aledo, Illinois (near the Quad Cities), Lee attended the Kansas City Art Institute studying with Ernest Lawson. Early in 1944 Life magazine commissioned four canvases by Lee depicting scenes from the musical Oklahoma! Other commissions followed for Life and several from book publishers who wanted her to illustrate stories including The Great Quillow by James Thurber, first published in 1944.
