Robert Brackman came to America with his parents when he was twelve, and studied painting under Robert Henri and George Bellows at the National Academy of Design. Known primarily as a portrait painter, Brackman brought an interest in balance and harmony to the study of the figure and to still-life painting, being heavily influenced by seventeenth-century Dutch painting, the work of Edouard Manet, and the classicism of Picasso.
