Robert Philipp

U.S. 1895-1981
Night Club 45.0823

Robert Philipp is best known for his sensitive portraits and figure studies. This painting of two women at a nightclub is reminiscent of the Impressionists' many studies and paintings of working women and women of leisure in Parisian cafés and café-concerts. Philipp once said, "For the most part I would be called a figure painter with a leaning toward the romantic." This is evident in Rendevouz, which portrays two young ladies dreamily sipping cocktails while a gentleman on the left gives them the once-over. Philipp spent a lengthy career as an instructor (thirty-three years) at the Art Students' League in New York.
