Walter Biggs Biggs

U.S. 1886-1968
Dunkards 38.0425

The title of this undated watercolor refers to the religious group, the Dunkers or Dunkards, members of Church of the Brethren or other German Baptist denominations, who practiced triple immersion at baptism and refused oath-taking and military service. Biggs studied at the New York School of Art under Robert Henri and Edward Penfield. Later he worked as an illustrator for both Harper's and Scribner's while teaching at the Art Students League. An accomplished watercolorist, Biggs gives us a glimpse of these soberly dressed people using subtle shades and economic brushtrokes.
