Mexican Colonial
Jose de la Mota (Mora)
Mexico act. 1708-1725Christ Washing the Feet of the Disciples 25.0185
The subject of the painting is taken from John 13 and occurs immediately following the Last Supper. Christ holds the foot of the perplexed disciple, Peter, who resists Christ's humble task. Behind, the other disciples are depicted in a frieze-like arrangement stretching across the canvas. To the left, silhouetted in the foreground, Judas (without a halo) clutches a bag of money. Almost nothing is known of this artist's life except for the series of signed works in a naïve idealizing style that he produced over two decades at the beginning of the 18th century. He may have specialized in scenes from Christ's passion, as evidenced by The Last Supper, now in the Pinacoteca Virreinal, Mexico City.
