Gearge Rickey

U.S. 1907-2002
Broken Lines Slanting 74.0002

Among kinetic sculptors, Rickey is regarded as a purist because his carefully balanced elements move in reaction to forces and currents rather than by mechanical means. His "broken lines" are delicately balanced needles of steel. Born in South Bend, Indiana, Rickey moved with his family to Scotland, later studying at Oxford, in Paris, and still later at N.Y.U., the University of Iowa, and the Institute of Design in Chicago. He came to sculpture relatively late in life after trying his hand at other pursuits. His interest in machines and mechanical devices was present at an early age, however, and translated into a concern with the organization of movement as sculpture.
