Allow Your Minds to Broaden and Expand demonstrates Marvin Cone's interest in structural forms as well as his fascination with the peculiarities of carnival life. In his painting, the "barker" urges the viewer to come and see Mlle Hortense and other "oddities." Iowa native, Marvin Cone, has frequently been linked to Grant Wood, not only because Cone taught at Wood's Stone City Art Colony (1932-1933), but because the two were lifelong friends. Cone developed his own style in the shadow of his better-known colleague, painting the American scene, particularly Iowa landscapes with old barns. Cone later developed a fascination with carnival and circus imagery, and later still, mysterious interiors and empty rooms.
