Ceramics at Black Hawk College
Monday & Wednesday evenings 5:30 pm – 8:16 pm, August 19 – October 9, 2019 (no class September 2)

This ceramics class is a collaboration with Black Hawk College. It offers a unique ‘blended’ experience combining Black Hawk students with students 16 and older, who take the class as non-credit through the Figge Art Museum. Students will learn techniques in hand building, wheel work, identifying clays and glazes, firing and more.

Wood Whittling Basics - Whittle Birdies
10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, August 24

Learn to whittle wood in this introductory figure-carving course. Grain orientation, wood properties and knife safety will be discussed as participants carve a bird to take home.

Wine & Art - Backyard Birds
6-8 p.m. Thursday, September 5

Enjoy a glass of wine, light hors d'oeuvres and socializing during Wine & Art. For this session participants will use a combination of stencils and acrylic paint to capture a familiar feathered friend on canvas. Learn how to cut stencils, mix a palette that corresponds to your bird of choice, and free-hand details to make the painting your own.

The Set Table: Storytelling through Still-life Photography
10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, September 14

This workshop will guide students through the stages of developing a visual vocabulary which can used to create effective still-life arrangements to be captured with a camera. The roll of still-life in art history (both painting and photography), an awareness of light, emotional weight, proper image exposure, and image processing will be topics of discussion.

Guided Mindfulness: Meditation in the Galleries
6 p.m. Sunday, September 15

Experience mindfulness meditation in the galleries. Practitioners will be guided in ways to calm the mind and body, and to bring awareness to the present moment. Meditations will be led by practitioners from the Prairie Oak Sangha and Prairie River Sangha. This class is free, but advanced registration is required.

Talk about a great stress reliever! In this two-hour class you will learn beginner clay techniques using air-dry clay. Create your own masterpieces using basic hand-building techniques. This class is open to all ages!

Break away from the two-dimensional and learn to think in 3D! In this workshop, students will gain an understanding of the relationship between works on paper and works in space and learn to use wire as a material for thinking and creating in space.

Clay Basics
6-8 p.m. Tuesdays, October 29-December 3

A great clay experience for beginners or students with some clay experience. We'll cover hand-building basics and do two weeks of wheel-throwing! Each student will end this session with several finished projects and have the chance to learn about low-fire clay and colorful glazes.

Sculpture
6-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, October 30-December 4

This course encourages participants to explore the meaning of sculpture in both a personal and a practical sense, using a diverse range of non-traditional art materials, techniques and objects to create unique pieces. Participants will experiment with a range of techniques, including assemblage, collage, simple moldmaking, binding and joining in order to create small or medium-scale pieces inspired by a particular concept, place or memory significant to them.
