About

Innovators and Legends: Generations in Textiles and Fiber

Amid the social and artistic upheavals of the 1960s and 70s, artists began using traditional “craft” media to make sculptural and conceptual works that expanded our definitions of the visual arts. Innovators and Legends, an exhibition organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art, features over seventy pieces by fifty artists from the U.S. and abroad who belong to the first, and subsequent, generations of these artists who explore the myriad possibilities inherent in fabric, thread, fiber and yarn. Weaving, knitting, soft sculpture, embroidery, felting and other techniques are featured, used in ways that are by turns painterly, sculptural or fashionable and often surprising and amusing.

This exhibition is on view through September 7, 2014.
