Mathurin Moreau

France 1882-1912
The Exiles 51.0919

Moreau was over seventy when his marble group The Exiles, which was shown at the 1889 Salon, was installed in the Tuileries. Smaller bronzes of very large compositions, such as this one, were frequently made after the large marble sculptures were completed. Moreau was born into a family of sculptors and was one of many well-known sculptors from Dijon. After studying at the Écoles des Beaux Arts in Paris under Etienne-Jules Ramy and Augustin-Alexandre Dumont, Moreau embarked upon a lengthy career, creating numerous bronzes for fountains, architectural exteriors, and public commissions throughout France.
