Painter, sculptor, graphic artist, actor, poet, and designer, Larry Rivers was born in New York City and is considered to be one of the leading figures in the revival of figurative art that followed the popularity New York abstract expressionist painting. After serving in the U.S Army Air Corps during World War II, Rivers earned a living as a jazz saxophonist. He later studied at Hans Hofmann's school and under William Baziotes at NYU. Rivers combined a finely tuned awareness of popular culture, a wry sense of humor, and a sensuous handling of paint to produce biting commentaries on how Americans live and how we view ourselves, our history, and our culture.
