Volunteer Opportunities

DEVELOPMENT

  • Marketing Committee
    Help promote the museum, our volunteers are our best advocates! Energetic, professional and dedicated volunteers are needed to plan museum involvement with numerous community festivals throughout the year. Volunteers are also utilized to assist with museum speaker’s bureau and public relations projects.
     
    Days/hours: Weekly meetings and various engagements.
     
  • Bulk Mailings
    Put in a morning with friends and help the museum. Periodic help is needed to assist with bulk mailings – stuffing, labeling and sorting envelopes.
     
    Days/Hours: Weekday mornings approximately twice a month 9-11 and 1-3.
     
  • Special Events Committees
    The events are fun but they take some work! We need assistance in planning and set-up of museum events, including Gala Premiere Evenings, member exhibition tours, and fundraising events.
     
    Days/Hours: Weekday evenings.

 

EDUCATION

  • Docent Program
    Individuals who have a love of art, like to learn, and who are comfortable speaking to groups of children and adults, are encouraged to apply for our Docent program. Volunteers are needed to give museum tours and present outreach programs in schools and community settings. Docents must complete a 9-month course which includes art history, art appreciation, and general training, and are required to purchase the necessary textbook and handbook.
     
    Days/Hours: Training: Wednesday mornings (September – May). Tours: Weekdays, occasional weekends, and weekday evenings.
     
  • Education Programs
    Volunteers are needed to help with Saturday and Sunday afternoon programs. Volunteers assist with studio activities, distribute gallery guides, and answer questions. For student art receptions, volunteers may serve refreshments and take Polaroid pictures of students. Volunteers need to enjoy working with large groups of people.
     
    Days/Hours: Weekend afternoons.
     
  • Studio Volunteers
    The Figge studios will be busy with youth classes and workshops throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to assist studio teachers with preparation and cleanup, and assist children with activities as needed. We will also need volunteers to greet parents, supervise children at the east entrance for parent drop-offs and pick-ups, and accompany children during gallery visits.
     
    Days/Hours: Weekend mornings and afternoons, and summer weekday mornings and afternoons.
     
  • Family Activity Center
    Volunteers are needed to staff the Family Activity Center, an activity room designed for children ages 7-11. Helpers monitor and restock art supplies, straighten activity areas, assist children with activities and answer questions as needed. Volunteers must enjoy working with children. Computer knowledge is helpful, but not required.
     
    Days/Hours: Weekend and weekday mornings and afternoons.
     

LIBRARY

  • Reading Room Assistant
    Volunteers are needed to staff the Library information desk and assist Library patrons in finding materials and using library databases. Knowledge of reference materials used in art research is helpful.
     
    Days/Hours: Weekend and weekday mornings and afternoons.
     
  • Library Assistant
    Volunteers are needed to help with ordering and receiving materials and processing and filing materials. Volunteers must be able to use a computer.
     
    Days/Hours: Tuesday – Friday, mornings or afternoons.

 

VISITOR SERVICES

  • Gallery Attendant:
    Professional and friendly volunteers are needed to greet visitors, answer basic questions and monitor traffic and behavior in the galleries. Volunteers must be able to stand/walk for periods of three hours.
     
    Days/hours: Weekends, Holidays and Special Events.
     
  • Information and tourmate:
    Friendly and dependable volunteers are needed to assist museum staff by handing out complimentary audio devices.  Greeting visitors, handing floor plans and gallery guides, answering basic questions and instructing visitors how to use and check out the Tour Mate audio system.
     
  • Greeter/Registration:
    Energetic and welcoming volunteers are needed to greet visitors in the lobby and in the galleries, check in participants for events and programs, hand out brochures, and answer basic questions about the museum.  Volunteers must be able to stand for up to two hours at a time.
     
    Days/hours:  Various times including evenings and weekends.

Volunteer shifts are three hours long.  Work study and service learning students are welcome.  Completing a two hour training session and background check is necessary to begin volunteer duties.  There is a minimum of 36 volunteer hours/year requirement.
