Collection Tours

Figge collection tours are offered every Sunday at 1:30 pm. Meet in the main lobby. Tours are free with membership or paid admission.  Collection tours also are available by appointment for groups of 10 more whenever the museum is open. The Passion of Christ

Experience the passion and crucifixion of Christ through paintings from the large collection of sacred works displayed at the Figge Art Museum.  This tour will bring to life the suffering and death of Christ.  The tour is offered as a special observance of the holy season of Lent.  Meet in the main lobby.

 

Easter Tour

Follow the drama of Christ's passion and death as told in works of art, both ancient and recent.  Beginning with the Passover feast of the Last Supper, observe how artists have depicted the scene before Pontius Pilate, the scourging, the march up Calvary, the crucifixion and finally the descent from the cross.  Learn how artists use line, color and texture to paint the emotions of Easter Weekend.  Meet in the main lobby.

Saints and Sinners

The tour entertains with a lively discussion of the “good guys” and “bad guys” who have been represented in sacred and secular art. We’ll discover how and why artists represented saints, apostles, and martyrs. And we will give equal time to images of those forever branded by their wicked deeds.

 

 

Haitian Vodou

Haitian art in the Figge Collection can be appreciated for its delightful color and charming simplicity. But an understanding of Vodou can provide a deeper appreciation of the Figge’s paintings and sculptures. This tour will examine a fascinating religion that developed among the slave populations in the Caribbean.

 

 

 

The Life of the Virgin Mary: Paintings at the Figge

Mary has been a favorite theme for artists throughout centuries. The tour will follow her life as a very young girl in the temple, to her death bed surrounded by the Apostles.  Learn about the many ways she has been represented by painters from New Spain (colonial Mexico), America, and Europe.  Discover the symbols used to create images of Mary as the Virgin without stain, the mother of Christ, the Queen of Heaven, Madonna of the Rosary, the Virgin of Guadeloupe, and others.
